It’s been a month of extremes for many sailors across Australia.

The bushfires that have ravaged Australia over the past couple of months are world news. They have caused immense destruction of homes, bushland, wildlife and sadly, have cost almost 30 people their lives.

Although minor in comparison to the broader impact, they have also wreaked havoc on sailing events with the annual SOLAS Big Boat Challenge in Sydney cancelled in December due to the smoke and the Couta Boat Classic in Sorrento cancelled earlier this month, to name a couple.

Now, the sailing community is coming together to give back to the dedicated men and women who have been fighting these fires through the ‘Firefighter Family Day on the water’ initiative created by Above & Beyond Boating, and other initiatives.

Over the past few days NSW and VIC have received some much needed rain in the form of some wet and wild weather. This made for exciting conditions for those out racing – check out the articles below to read about how these conditions impacted Sail Melbourne and the Farr 40 One Design regatta.

In New Zealand, the much anticipated Bay of Islands Race Week kicked off today with more pleasant conditions forecast for the regatta.

That’s all for this week’s sailing (and weather) update – catch you all next week!

Until then, happy sailing 😊⛵️
