Walking past a cafe earlier today I was pleasantly surprised to see SAILING being covered on the news!
Not just a 5 second blip that would barely register with the average viewer – a several minute-long interview on a major news channel. They were interviewing Australia’s Tom Slingsby about the upcoming SailGP season 2 opener to be held in Sydney February 28-29, 2020.
While the format and equipment used in SailGP makes it a far cry from how the average MySail member participates in the sport, it’s great to see sailing in the limelight.
More main-stream media coverage of sailing will hopefully help to increase participation and interest in our sport. However, I do wonder if this type of coverage with multi-million dollar machines travelling at immense speeds makes sailing seem even more out of reach to the average viewer.
What are your thoughts – is media coverage of sailing’s ‘Formula 1’ type events good for participation, or not? Click here to have your say.
Happy sailing,
