The Notice of Race for the aptly named ‘Breakout Series 2020’ has been released by its four organising authorities; Middle Harbour Yacht Club, the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and Port Stephens Yacht Club.

Starting on 8 August 2020 in Sydney, the regatta includes 3 passages races followed by a lay day, then 3 race days at Port Stephens. The passage legs will take competitors from Sydney to Pittwater, Pittwater to Newcastle and finally Newcastle to Port Stephens.

Designed to attract a variety of competitors, the regatta caters for small to big yachts, cruiser-racers, 2-handed competitors and includes a Cruise in Company as well as the racing events.

The concept of this event was born in Port Stephens in a conversation between MHYC Commodore Peter Lewis, NCYC CEO Paul O’Rourke and Ocean Media’s Scott Alle. The RPAYC and PSYS quickly got onboard with the concept, and so the regatta was born.

“It’s a celebration of sailing and coming out after the COVID-19 lockdowns,” said Peter Lewis. “We wanted to create an event that would have great sailing as well as a great social atmosphere. The Breakout Series 2020 came together with the right spirit of sailing.”

The Breakout Series 2020 is limited to 60 yachts, and at the time of writing there were already 16 entries listed online. All social events will be held in accordance with the government regulations for COVID-19 at the time of the event.

The event is being held in support of the Making Waves foundation.
